The World Vision 30 Hour Famine is a student-led movement helping children around the globe

In February 1971, 17-year-old Ruth Roberts and 14 friends staged a "starve-in" in a church basement in Calgary to draw attention to the struggle of African children suffering during a continent-wide famine. "We chose to stop eating for a day and a half so we could understand, even in a small way, what those children were experiencing," recalls Roberts.

The 30 Hour Famine is a fun event allowing Canadian students to helps children globally by supporting World Vision projects.

For many it's bigger than prom - a night where kids get to take over their schools, walls come down between cliques and everyone has a giant party to celebrate the change they are making in the world. The World Vision 30 Hour Famine (famine.ca) is the largest youth fundraising event in the world to fight poverty and hunger. It's also a fun night, and a social highlight for schools and youth groups across Canada. Every group gets to plan a unique event as they go without solid food for 30 hours.

Students are savvier and more globally minded than ever -- in many households they are the ones inspiring families to get involved. It does not take much to encourage and motivate today's students to take action on things like volunteering, advocating or rallying for change. This biggest challenge is how to connect students with issues they are most passionate about. It can be a great way for them to feel good about themselves, improve a university application or resumé and to build friendships.

Scouts Canada's annual Good Turn Week will take place April 13-21, spreading goodwill to Canadians from coast to coast. The community is encouraged to participate by performing their own good deeds -- joining Scouts Canada's roughly 27,000 volunteers and 74,000 youth members.
