Turkey, thanks and time to give back--make this Thanksgiving stand for something.
This Thanksgiving, many Canadians are looking for ways to show their appreciation and give thanks for everything they have been blessed with. As families come together to mark the end of the harvest season, homes overflow with food and good company. This Thanksgiving, why not take the opportunity to celebrate in a meaningful way?
Volunteer your time - Many families make it a point to do good deeds on Thanksgiving as a way to give back to their communities. Take some time to volunteer and lend a hand to make a difference in your community. Visit a local homeless shelter and spend some time with those who have no one, or donate food to the local food bank.
Give a meaningful gift - Why not start up a new family tradition by sharing with those who are less fortunate. Charities like World Vision, offer great options (Worldvision.ca/gifts) that make giving worthwhile. Gifts like a goat, sponsoring a child, providing food for children and families or stocking a medical clinic can make a real difference to some of the world's most vulnerable children and families.
Donate a meal – There are many families in Canada that can’t afford a proper Thanksgiving meal. Show how thankful you are for all that you have, by helping others feel the same. Whether it’s through a local church, charitable organization, or even through a friend, providing dinner for a family in need is a great way to give thanks. It can be a memorable and rewarding experience knowing that you were able to make this time of year special for someone who is less fortunate.
Be thankful – This year, why not make Thanksgiving about giving thanks and less about the size of your turkey. Instead, plan a simple dinner to cut back on the fuss and bother. And then as you gather around the table with those you love, take the time for each to share a reason he or she is thankful. It’s a great way to show gratitude and can make your Thanksgiving the most meaningful yet.
