Have you ever wondered what really goes on at a purebred dog show? Does the idea of attending conjure up big screen images of quirky, comedic characters?

You might be surprised to know that these canine competitions are more than just paws, pomp and pageantry. Purebreds vying for the coveted title of "Best in Show" train like Olympians to make it into the ring. And dedicated breeders spend decades working to ensure every purebred puppy they produce is healthy with a good temperament.

The Purina National, Canada’s most prestigious dog show, offers a glimpse into this exciting world. Below are just a few things you may not know about dog shows!

Getting to Best in Show

Dog shows are, quite simply, a process of elimination. To make it to the Best in Show ring, dogs from over 100 different breeds first have to win Best of Breed. In this competition, each competitor is judged against specific breed standards that define how the dog should act and look. Did you know there’s a good reason for a Poodle’s provocative grooming? As a hunting dog that worked in icy winter waters, Poodles needed a thick, heavy coat. To keep them from sinking (due to the weight) owners shaved them everywhere but around the heart and joints. This is called the "hunting trim".

Best of Breed winners go on to compete against dogs within their group for the title Best in Group. There are seven Groups in total and each one has an "essence" that is found in every breed. For example, the Golden Retriever is in the Sporting Dog Group and its essence is to please its owner.

And finally, after much deliberation and elimination, the seven Best in Group winners enter the ring to compete for the coveted Best in Show. The thrill and excitement of canine competition comes alive in this final round as dogs and handlers give it their all for the title and status of being named Best in Show.
