Make a difference at school: Support a charity
This school semester why not join the movement in your school to end poverty and injustice throughout the world. There are lots of ways to get friends and students at your school to become involved in learning about global issues. Here are some creative ways to engage your school in global issues:
- Fundraise. Organize a fundraising event with your classmates. The event can help raise money for a charity that helps the poor. A car wash, bake sale or a raffle are easy ideas that can raise a lot of money and are not difficult to organize.
- Spread the word. Get permission to announce a global issues fact on your school PA every morning or in your homeroom. Students might be inspired to take action and do something to help fight things like poverty and hunger.
- Volunteer. Talk to your teacher and ask if you can organize a class trip to a food bank or a women's shelter. Community service starts in your local community and is a great way to give back. Not only can you make a difference in another person's life, but you will feel good in the process.
- Contribute. Support a school community overseas. Through the World Vision Gift Catalogue, (WorldVision.ca/gifts) your school can help children in other parts of the world by purchasing school supplies for a classroom or providing a teacher with textbooks for their students. Having the opportunity to give children the gift of education is so worthwhile and what better way to make this happen than through students helping students.
