Parents need to do homework for insurance needs
Student life isn't what it used to be. Gone are the days when college life meant the bare bones standard of living, as many parents today are filling their children's dorm rooms and rental apartments with valuable consumer goods, including flat-screen televisions, home theatre systems, laptops, cameras, and stereo equipment.
While providing kids with the comforts of home can make for a more comfortable transition for students living away from home for the first time, parents need to examine their current insurance plans to ensure their children, and their property, are protected.
"When you consider the total value of student property — everything from home electronics and laptops to furniture and clothing — it can really add up," said Mark Sherk, President of the Verge Insurance Group. "In the event of a break-in or accidental damage, parents need to be aware of the possibility that not all of these valuables will be covered under their current insurance plan. Before sending their kids off for school, it's important that parents contact their insurance broker for advice on their home insurance plan to ensure their children's belongings are covered."
Fortunately there are insurance plans available for parents of university and college students, such as WA's 50 Unique, an insurance solution designed for the 50 plus set and includes the protection of student property.
