You recycle, take public transit and have even ventured at making your own compost, but now you're ready to take that next step to make your home more energy efficient. Here are a few ways to take your positive impact on the environment through the roof:

Use recycled shingles. If you are considering replacing your roof, try using recycled asphalt shingles. These shingles use reclaimed materials which will reduce waste and often have a lifespan of 50 years versus the average 15-year lifespan of regular shingles.

Consider slate roofing material. Slate is a natural material that makes for a great roofing choice. Although this option can be expensive, it is durable and energy-efficient. This material can be reclaimed and recycled and can last up to 100 years with very minimal maintenance.

Brush a reflective coating onto your existing roof. Replacing your roof may not be in your budget, so brushing a reflective coating onto your existing roof is a great alternative. A coated roof can reflect around 80 per cent of sunlight, which will keep your house cooler and lower your air-conditioning bill.

Invest in solar panels or tiles. While not the most aesthetically pleasing to look at, this roofing option comes in tiles or panels. By collecting sunlight, this material can generate electricity for your home, conserve energy and lower your energy bills.

Spread a little solar power through charities. You can help other raise the roof for the environment by helping make entire schools or health clinics become energy efficient. Through charities like World Vision (WorldVision.ca/gifts), you can purchase solar panels that will bring light and sustainable energy to schools and clinics where there may be no electricity.
